Gurpreet Bains Takes Strong Stance on Community Safety

26/09/2018 – Brampton, Ontario – Ms. Gurpreet Kaur Bains, candidate for Regional Councillor in Wards 2 and 6 in Brampton, has made community safety the cornerstone of her campaign platform. Bains is committed to taking the necessary steps to champion crime prevention and reduce violence in Brampton.

As a longtime resident of Brampton, Bains has noticed crime is on the increase and many residents in Wards 2 and 6 no longer feel safe in their neighbourhood. Bains wants to bring a fresh perspective to Council and focus on collaborating with the community to drive initiatives that have proven to reduce crime and violence in other cities.

To ensure that Brampton families feel safe and that Council is addressing the root causes of crime and violence, Bains proposes:

  • collaborating with Brampton Fire and Emergency Services on initiatives targeting Brampton youth, similar to what has proved successful in Meaford;

  • ensuring Peel Regional Council put together a framework for Peel Regional Police as to how to deal with the increase in crime and violence;

  • developing youth-focused programs to provide education on anti-violence strategies, mental health, skills development and mentorship;

  • utilizing current programs and collaborating with the communities to develop new programs; and

  • always be accessible to hear the concerns of her residents.

“While knocking on doors in Wards 2 and 6, every single neighbour brings up the increase in crime and the rise in violence in our community as their main concerns. I have personally seen the devastation of this crime and I am committed to addressing this at Council,” said Bains. “It is unacceptable that the incumbent is the Chair of the Community Safety Advisory Committee and has failed to convene meetings when community safety is top of mind for so many constituents.”

Gurpreet Kaur Bains has a Concrete Plan to Address Gridlock and Traffic Safety

03/10/2018 – Brampton, Ontario – Ms. Gurpreet Kaur Bains, candidate for Regional Councillor in Wards 2 and 6 in Brampton has a concrete plan to address a common concern she has been hearing from the residents in Wards 2 and 6 – traffic congestion and road safety.

Outdated technology, disorganized traffic network, speeding and traffic safety disobedience are all contributing factors leading to an increased number of car accidents in Brampton. The City of Brampton’s has identified street lighting upgrades, traffic signal updates, and traffic calming methods as key projects as solutions to ease traffic congestion and improve road safety.

Once elected, Bains intends to propose that the City of Brampton take their efforts one step farther and ensure we are future-ready by investing in Smart Lights. This modernized traffic light system will provide the City the ability to monitor and streamline traffic flow effectively, while pairing it with targeted traffic calming methods to decrease gridlock.

“By utilizing emerging technology and proven best practices, I intend to ensure Brampton is a safer community for pedestrians and drivers alike,” said Bains. “As a City, we must always be actively researching innovative and environmentally sustainable options to ensure the concerns of our residents are addressed while making the necessary investments to be a future-ready city.”

Meet your Ward 2 and 6 Regional Candidate Gurpreet Bains

Hello neighbour, I am Gurpreet Bains and I am running to be your regional councillor in wards 2 and 6. I have the vision and determination to create a Brampton that we are proud to call home.

I attended school at Williams Parkway and North Park before completing my law degree at the University of New Brunswick. I returned to Brampton to open my legal practice in 2014. As a lawyer, I worked with Brampton residents from many different backgrounds. My professional experience has prepared me to advocate for my constituents responsibly.

Through knocking on doors, I’ve learned that many of our concerns are the same. We all want a safe community, improved road and transit infrastructure, a striving economy, and a trustworthy local government. I am committed to achieving this and so much more by working collaboratively with my council colleagues.

My top priority as your regional councillor will be violence prevention. Violent crime has affected far too many families and I have a plan to work with the community and law enforcement to provide youth with mentorship and education on anti-violence strategies, mental health, and skills development so that our youth are equipped to deal with confrontation and hardship.

In order to combat traffic gridlock and congestion, I plan to modernize our traffic lights system and implement traffic-calming methods to promote road safety. I vow to advocate for a strong transit network that will better connect the people who work, live, and invest in our city.

To encourage economic development in Brampton, I plan to collaborate with local innovation hubs, post-secondary institutions and medical centres while focusing on emerging sectors such as cybersecurity to establish Brampton as a model city, thereby attracting foreign investment.

A lack of transparency in council has led to a distrust between council and the voters. I want to remedy this by hiring an independent auditor general to monitor the city’s spending and remaining accessible to my constituents.

What allows me to stand out from the other candidates is the fact that I have a plan to create a safer and brighter future for Brampton. I am competent, passionate, and motivated. I promise to dedicate the next four years to empowering the community and voicing their concerns in council.
